Profile: Robert Larkin

Biography:

I am a fifth generation Nevadan, born in Ely on May 17th 1953 to Charles and Darlene Larkin. I am married to Sylvia with adult children, Rick, Linda and Mary and I have lived in Sparks for the last 22 years.

Philosophy:

My philosophy is that government cannot nor should it be all things to all people; but, it does have a responsibility to offer each and every citizen fair and equitable opportunities for a fulfilling life. I strongly believe that all should serve the community which has served them so well. And in that regard, I have for many years, been extremely active in Washoe County serving on numerous boards and commission.

Goals:

As County Commissioner representing Sparks, Spanish Springs, Warm Springs and Wadsworth it is my goal to ensure these areas receive their fair share of the regional economic pie as up-and-coming top communities in the nation. For many years, Sparks appropriately played the bedroom community for the region. But all things change and now Sparks is approaching the 100,000 population magic number. And as such, it needs to be considered a full partner in the region’s economic development. It is my goal as a commissioner to be sure Sparks, Spanish Springs and other areas of District 4 are fairly represented at the county commission and all countywide economic development opportunities.

The region has three principle challenges. One is maintaining the quality of life, which includes open space. Second is intergovernmental cooperation and the third is economic diversification. Neither one is more important than other. All three have to be addressed simultaneously or else we are going to end up with Bay Area challenges. To solve these challenges is going to require elected officials that have their feet firmly planted in the 21st century and not dreaming of what it was like in the 20th century. I am that Elected official who understands and has the experience to work with all entities within the region. I also have the business background as well as the academic credentials to converse and assist in solving the emerging issues as well as the old problems the region as dealt with for so many years under the cloud of incumbents.
