Mission Statement
The mission of the Washoe County Medical Examiner and Coroner's Office is to investigate unexpected and unexplained deaths in order to identify and report on the cause and manner of death. We apply scientific investigative techniques and medical procedures, using integrity and compassion to serve families and public agencies impacted by sudden unexpected death.

Where are you located?
The Medical Examiner and Coroner's Office is located at 10 Kirman Avenue, Reno, Nevada, at the corner of Kirman Avenue and Second Street. This location is adjacent to Renown Regional Medical Center.
How do I get a copy of an autopsy report?
Copies of autopsies, when completed, are available to next-of-kin or other persons upon written authorization by next-of-kin; attending physicians; any person who, by subpoena, seeks information for use in a judicial proceeding; and law enforcement as may be required to carry out their official duties. Written requests may be submitted to the Washoe County Coroner's Office by mail.
How can I get a copy of a death certificate?
Death certificates, when completed, may be obtained through the Washoe County Health Department, Vital Statistics Section (775-328-2455), or the State of Nevada Office of Vital Records (775-684-4242). Certified copies are available only upon written request and payment of the appropriate fee to the County or State. A family may order certified copies of the death certificate when making arrangements with the funeral home at the time of death.

Next of kin or their designee may obtain personal property held by the Washoe County Medical Examiner and Coroner's Office, at 10 Kirman Avenue, Reno, Nevada. Identification must be presented and a receipt signed.
What is toxicology?
Toxicology is laboratory testing to identify what, if any, drugs or poisons are present. The tests are usually performed on blood or other body fluids. Comprehensive testing usually requires eight to ten weeks.

Money is placed into a holding account. Upon notification of the Medical Examiner and Coroner's Office of the correct address of next of kin, a check for the full amount will be sent via certified mail.
