As temperatures in the Truckee Meadows begin to cool down, the local bat population begins its annual migration to locations where food (primarily bugs) remains plentiful. According to Scott Monsen, Program Manager of the Vector Borne Diseases Program, this is also the time of year that the District Health Department (DHD) staff finds several dead or dying bats.
The Washoe County District Health Department has been advised that persons from the Truckee Meadows area who attended the Global Gaming Expo at the Las Vegas Convention Center the week of September 12, 2005 might have been exposed to hepatitis A through an infected individual working at the conference.
As self-evacuees from Hurricane Katrina continue to arrive in northern Nevada individually or with small family groups, local agencies are continuing to partner to ensure the evacuees have access to services needed to help them get back on their feet.
Although Reno is now unlikely to receive a large group of Hurricane Katrina evacuees from nationally organized efforts, smaller groups of self-evacuees already have arrived in Reno, and local organizations remain ready to help them.
The Washoe County District Health Department has received notification of the first human case of West Nile Virus infection in a Washoe County resident under the age of 50, according to Michelle Kling, Acting District Health Officer. The District Health Department is reminding the residents of Washoe County to continue to take personal precautions, even though temperatures are dropping, Kling stated.
