Funding for training seminars offered by outside agencies is built into the departmental budgets based on department's need and request. Employees are encouraged to seek ongoing training and to discuss these opportunites with their supervisors.

 Brain   Benefit Education Opportunites

Washoe County provides multiple opportunities throughout the year for employees to learn more about their benefits.  Some of these are as follows:

  • New Employee Orientation - all of the benefit options are presented to new employees every other month during orientation.  This is also when employees are given the opportunity to enroll in the various benefit plans offered.
  • Excellence in Public Service Certificate Programs -a series of certificate programs that recognizes successful completion of essential employee development courses.
  • Hartford Seminars - The Hartford presents financial seminars for employees to learn more about investing and planning and saving for retirement.  Topics for these sessions varies for each event.
  • Benefits Fair - Held once per year, this gathering of benefit providers, educational institutions and other opportunities for a well rounded, healthy lifestyle is a popular event for County employees.  Providers come prepared to answer questions and share information on the various benefits offered to employees and their family members.
  • Health Fairs - Held at various locations throughout the County, the health fairs are an opportunity for employees to have various health screenings, some free of charge, to determine levels of wellness and gather information on establishing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  These fairs are integrated into the Wellness Program.
  • Retirement Planning - This session is for employees planning to retire within two years of the date of the session.  Representatives from PERS, Social Security, The Hartford, Benefits, and Payroll attend to present to employees what to expect in retirement and what needs to happen to ensure all benefits are optimized.  Recent retirees also attend to share their real life experience on transitioning into retirement.
