Linux Resources

What is Linux? Linux is a F.O.S.S. (Free Open Source Software) operating system similar to Windows. Linux gives you all of the tools you need to accomplish your personal or business work. At this time there are 100+ distributions of Linux operating systems that can accommodate even the most discriminating tastes. If you are looking for a version for your desktop, laptop, slate or netbook, Linux has a version that can fit you!

From high end servers supporting multinational corporations like IBM or Sun, to small businesses; from foreign governments to the U.S., State, County (like Washoe County) and Municipal governments; whether its a website or a desktop, high powered gaming or a secure system for your children, the Linux system may be the one for you.

Linux is ready to go as soon as you load it onto your computer. Fully functional software that comes standard and available without purchase are the Firefox web browser; Gimp, the photo editing program; OpenOffice, the Microsoft Office competitor; and this is just the tip of the iceberg. You can find software to fit your needs easily enough through Linux but, if you want to see just about all of the available software take a look at this site: Linux Applications.

Washoe County Library will be providing classes soon so be sure to take a look at the available tutorials, information and sites that we have supplied for you.
