At today’s Washoe County Commission meeting, the Board accepted the final report from the County Budget Policy Committee which included 13 budget principles designed to guide the County as it prepares its 2009/10 budget with an anticipated $47 million shortfall. The projected shortfall is a result of the continuing weak economy which has resulted in $64 million worth of spending cuts already made over the past three years.

At today`s special meeting, the Board of County Commissioners directed staff to plan for a 15% overall reduction in the 2009/10 fiscal year budget in recognition of continuing declines in sales tax and property tax revenues which account for about 80% of Washoe County`s total revenues. They also directed that individual departments develop their 2009/10 budgets with reductions ranging from 6% to 36% based on priority criteria.
