General Assistance
General Assistance (GA) provides cash grants to clients or vouchers to vendors to temporarily help low-income families or individuals. Generally, applicants for GA fall into one of three categories: employable applicants, applicants pending assistance from Nevada State Welfare, and disabled applicants. Applicants must apply for assistance from State, Federal, and other community programs before requesting assistance from the County.
Employable Applicants
Able-bodies, employable applicants may be eligible for GA if they have not been terminated from employment due to their own faults or habits or voluntarily resigned from a job within 30 days from the date of application. With some exceptions, employable applicants must actively look for work.
Employable applicants are assisted in GA for a maximum of 30 days in a 12-month period.
Applicants Pending Assistance from Nevada State Welfare
Applicants for Temporary Aid for Needy Families (TANF) and other programs that are primarily the responsibility of the State are assisted while their applications are being processed by the State. Assistance is granted for up to 30 days in a 12-month period based on the condition that the applicant cooperate fully with the State and follow through with the application process.
Disabled Applicants
Applicants who claim temporary or permanent disability must provide medical verification of the disability. A physician must renew disability verification every three months.
Applicants in this category who claim disability for more than three months must apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability (SSD), Medicaid, and/or Vocational Rehabilitation services. If the applicant/client refuses to pursue a referral to these agencies, he/she may be terminated from GA for non-cooperation.
