Before and After Photos - Spanish Springs Sewer Phase 1a In April of 2000, high levels of nitrates in public wells located in Spanish Springs prompted the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) to direct the Washoe County Department of Water Resources (DWR) to immediately begin planning to expand community sewer service to the area. Studies showed the source of the groundwater contamination was individual septic systems. Since 2000, DWR has drafted and started implementing a facility plan to provide community sewer to roughly 2,000 homes in Spanish Springs Valley currently on individual septic systems. Phasing of the sewer project is based on many criteria including proximity to public wells, age of septic systems, condition of existing roads, and density of properties with septic systems. 12/22/06 - Notice to Homeowners
